Captain Pederson, USN Ret, has written an excellent memoir of his experiences in Topgun and the 9 original brothers. This book made me think back to my 20 year career in the USN (Chief Petty Officer USN Ret) I had been employed at the GE Armament Division in Burlington, Vermont, as a mechanical inspector. This plant was fully engaged in the Nam effort and we were 'pumping' out 7.62 MM Miniguns and 20 MM Vulcans at a rapid speed. The war effort began to dwindle and I lost my job in Dec 1970...actually Friday the 13th. On to another chapter in my life which included enlisting in the USN... Mar of 1971 as an Aviation Maintenance Administrationman...Data Analyst or statistician for aircraft data...And, yes I do miss the USN and my shipmates every single day...Navy Aviators are the cream of the crop and don't get any better than they are. The numbers that are presented in the prologue had been long forgotten by me. In the Gulf of Tonkin, for example, it is stated that 532 aircraft were lost and the USN had 644 aviators Missing in Action or Prisoners of War. Just staggering numbers when one thinks of those statistics. The reader is able to see Topgun through Captain Pederson's vision.. From its inception in the fall of 1968, the degree of dedication, leadership skills, passion, and adaptability are portrayed. In his words 'In combat second best is dead last'.This is a glimpse into Topgun which has never been seen before. Truly an outstanding book which will thrill anyone interested in aviation...particularly Naval Aviation. Do Naval Aviators have swagger? You betcha and deservedly so...One more personal note....when I was assigned to VA-45 at Cecil Field, FL in the early 1970's, I went through a 3 day course so I could back seat in the TA-4J's. When that back seat was free and it was near lunch time, I was able to fly with the pilot for missions...One of the highlights of my career.. I was in the USN during the Topgun era so this memoir really brought back a flood of my memories. Loved this book...I shall save this one on my Kindle for future reference. BZ to Captain Pederson, USN Ret, for writing this and thank for your service, Sir. This is truly a most interesting read with information and facts never presented previously. Most highly recommended for that 'new' glimpse' into the beginning of Topgun and its later days.. Fly Navy!!
This is a fascinating autobiography which in some ways pretends to be a history book. The book itself is Dan Pedersen's autobiography - he talks about his childhood and how he got into flying, bits of his love life and family life, his military career (from raw recruit to pilot in the Vietnam war to founding the TOPGUN school to his naval career), and his post-military life. Scattered throughout are his thoughts on warfare, specifically fighter/missile technology and pilot training/tactics, with the last chapter of the book being a polemic against the F-35.If you want to read this for the history of TOPGUN then this does function as a history book in many ways, as Dan Pedersen was the man charged with creating the school. He goes into why the school was created, who was chosen to teach, amusing anecodes from spinning up the program, and more. Again, this isn't a history novel and shouldn't be read like one, but if you're like me (only familiar with TOPGUN from the movie) this provided a fascinating glimpse into reality. The author was only involved with TOPGUN for its founding year before his orders took him elsewhere, though he does talk about how subsequent years were taught and the impact of some of the program's graduates.I'd give this 5 stars except that its a bit unfocused. The chapters surrounding the formation of TOPGUN are perhaps the best; the chapters where Dan Pedersen describes his life as a captain (of the USS Ranger, no less!) seem tacked on, and lack the detail present in earlier chapters. Furthermore its sometimes hard to separate fact from opinion, which is unfortunate for the layperson. Finally, the last chapter (where Pedersen decries the F-35) may have legitimate concerns, but its lacking context (i.e. do aircraft in 2019/2020 have the same operational needs as aircraft in the 1960s/1970s? Do geopolitics/potential foes come into play? Etc.).If you're looking for a detailed year-by-year accounting of TOPGUN then this isn't the book for you. However if you're at all interested in the topic then I'd highly recommend reading this, despite the flaws mentioned above.
This is the true story of the founding and operation of the Navy’s premiere training organization for its fighter pilots, Top Gun (or more accurately, “Topgunâ€), written by the guy who was its original founder and commander.Author Dan Pedersen’s story covers his entire career in the Navy, from “nugget†to commanding an aircraft carrier, and concludes by bringing us up to speed on his post-Navy activities. But the majority of the book deals with his experience as a fighter pilot (“naval aviator†in Navy parlance) and founder and commander of the Navy’s Topgun program.Along the way, we gain valuable insight into the problems with naval doctrine that led to the need for such a program, problems that in one way or another persist to this day in the military R&D system. This isn’t some stuffy or abstruse treatise. It’s an eminently readable and very entertaining story told by a guy who knows his subject, and how to tell it to us in a way to keep us hooked. This is one of the best works of military non-fiction I’ve ever read. Five stars.
