For those of you desperately looking for a book that follows in the great tradition of Pynchon, Gaddis, David Foster Wallace, Bolaño and a select few, you've found what you're looking for in Jim Gauer's "Novel Explosives". A masterful 'postmodern' novel about a man with an identity problem, some hired goons out to get him, and another person who has made fortunes in the market, followed by a whole array of astute observations, laugh out loud scenarios and some deep thoughts concerning various types of exotic wine, insider stock trading, rare or illegal paramilitary arms, the nature of 20th century Portuguese poetry, quantum physics, varieties of prescription drugs, the nature of identity, the chaos of war, the nature of very small portions of time, psychiatric ills, the grave injustice of social inequality, philosophy of language as well existentialism and all the possible ways a street in Juarez can mess with your brain. Add to it explosive (pun intended) scenarios, drug busts, illegal money laundering, a woman who can only tell her memories in a reverse fashion, another woman who thinks talking about satellite localization in relation to general relativity is "low level" conversation, and a man with a habit of behaving very strangely on odd days and much, much, much more, then you know you have in your hands one of the top 'postmodern' or simply 'ambitious' novels written in a long time. All in all a book that could easily win a Booker Prize - frequently difficult, but always fascinating and rewarding, a mind-expanding and mind-altering experience.
Subversive, heart-piercing, mind-altering. Also hilarious. What a read, what a ride, and so sublimely far from well behaved. Novel Explosives plays on so many divergent emotional and intellectual registers that at a certain point the omniscient narrator has to stop and reconsider his tone. I love that. And we need this. At point-blank range, Gauer examines economic inequality from the obscene top (where businesses are left to self-regulate under free-market morality – what could possibly go wrong?) to tragic bottom –- a bottom that punishes most all of our fellow inhabitants on this blue jewel of ours.How to prepare for the read? My advice: Think of José Saramago’s mastery of the utterly improbable circumstance; Michael Lewis’s wicked-priceless exposés of finance; the Coen Brothers’ idiosyncratic genius for tragicomic crime; James Joyce’s penchant for parodying crazy-extreme discourse; Roberto Bolaño’s magical-to-horrifying renderings of Mexico; Chris Hayes’ laser assessment of geopolitical absurdity; and Sergio de la Pava’s real-life-professional-insider urgency against a corrupt system; and maybe while you’re at it, consider the blueprint of a tabernacle, because in the last chapter, that’s where I found myself, smack inside the holy of holies, where Gauer delivered something César Vallejo might well have called A Miracle of the Spirit.Yup, I loved this novel!

Amazing. Intuitive. Smart. Playful. Wacky. And incredible writing.
Expansive novels with broad literary reach are usually slow going and, while I'm aware something with redeeming value is happening, the experience tends to be essentially an endless, painful austerity. Not so Novel Explosives - with twists and turns a mile a minute, I can't remember having quite so much fun reading Any book.
I loved Jim Gauer’s poetry (Paris Review, Iowa Review…) and was super-interested to see what he would do with long-form fiction.Bingo! Like Roberto Bolaño (whose 2666 still brings about moody questions about our humanity on the border) , Jim Gauer has created an enthralling novel from a poetic and critical mind, and my life is richer for it.
Written in three parts, the novel has some very distinct characters. The first is a man who loss his memory and wakes up in a hotel in Guanajuato. Mexico. Readers will follow him through an in-depth search for his identity, beliefs, and journey through his subconscious. The next character is Raymond, a thug who may have double-crossed his boss or is deep into a drug-induced nightmare. Then there is Gomez, who wants his ill-gained money back. The author entwines philosophical leitmotifs, particularly Soren Kierkegaard’s existentialist beliefs, with the men’s choices and actions.
Like nothing else. It would be easy to say something like Pynchon + Burroughs + Celine + Bolano but that would not do it justice. A book like no other. I would say that it isn't so much a novel as an experience but that sounds a little too much like my 1960's roots. That also does not do it justice. If you can deal with the challenge, this book is everything a reading experience can be.
