Tina Rowe served for 25 year on the Denver Police Department and retired as a Captain in Patrol. The next day she was sworn in as the presidential appointed United States Marshal for Colorado and served for 8 years. She was responsible for the security of the Oklahoma City bombing trials, held in Denver (US vs McVeigh and US vs Nichols). She was also the U.S. Marshal in Colorado during the events of 9/11/01. Tina trains, presents and consults on topics related to supervision, management, leadership, professional development and organizational improvement. Her speaking style is both humorous and inspirational--and always with immediately applicable information.Â

I bought several books for my Sgt assessment center a few years ago, and they had good information.For a Lt assessment center, I wanted a different kind of book, one that seemed better suited to the AC process, and at a higher level.I bought this book, and initially thought it wasn't very applicable, but I saw things that I liked, and plugged away, and resisted the urge to flip to the sections in the back for the "meat". I read the book all the way through, as recommended, and then read it again.The more I read, the more I realized how applicable the book is.This book doesn't give you answers, you'll have to do the work for that. BTW, you can't cram for a AC. You have to work to build the knowledge, skills, and abilities and takes time. So get good at your job and know your policies, that's very important.This book helps learn how to demonstrate to the assessors those KSA's that the assessors can use to evaluate you.Are you one of those folks who is damn good at your job, but do poorly on a AC? You need to learn how to communicate the good job that you do, by demonstrating the KSA's to the assessors. This book teaches you how to do that. But you have to do the work to get that result. This book shows you the way, you have to do the work.Additionally, Ms. Rowe goes over quite a few things that can make you better at the job you already have, not just the one you are testing for. I learned many things that I can use in my job every day, and away from the job, too.In closing, I recommend this book highly.I came in #1 in my AC, btw.Thank you, Ms. Rowe. I learned so much more than I thought I would.
If you are participating in an assessment center you need to read this book at least twice. This book gives you a foundation and understanding of what to expect and how to prepare. It’s not about giving you examples of what to say but on what to do. Finished 1st with a 96 out of 100 on my assessment score and I attribute this to Tina Rowe’s book. Don’t wait until the last minute. Get this book and start reading it. Take notes and discuss it with family or friends. I have recommended this book to other friends and they too have promoted and attribute their success to this book.
I was very pleasantly surprised by this book. I am preparing for an upcoming assessment and since it is to be my first experience being assessed I felt like I needed some help. Initially I was concerned about spending $42 on a fairly lengthy book. I wasn't sure if it would help and I didn't know if I would have the time to read it all. However, what I found in Ms. Rowe's book was a very well written, easy to read and well organized manual. What you will not find are a lot of specific questions that one may be asked with their corresponding answers (Ms. Rowe explains very well why she does not include this type of help); regardless, I absolutely feel MUCH more prepared for my assessment. In addition, I plan on using this book throughout my career because not only does it have excellent assessment preparation suggestions, but it can easily serve as a "how to be an effective supervisor" book. Even the format of the book, i.e., spiral bound (to lay flat), large margins (for taking notes) and blank note taking space at the end of each chapter, was well thought out. I highly recommend this book.
I am VERY late with this review, but felt a response to this purchase was needed. This is a Really Great book with ALOT of valuable information. I read the Entire book and applied Rowe's methods while preparing for my Departments Lt Exam in Chicago. This was the most difficult test I've ever taken! And with my busy schedule after opening a new buisness, it became Very stressful juggling a career, a new buisness, while still finding the time to study. So the extra knowledge and suggested practices were a Big Plus. Needless to say, I WILL BE PROMOTED! Additionally, I shared and studied this same information with my study partner. WE should be attending the same promotional class together. THANKS DR ROWE.
I had four weeks to prepare for my assessment test and I believe this book is an asset in my preparation. I also believe buying several books is necessary in your preparation for an assessment test.Rowe's certainly a subject matter expert and proves her knowledge by going deep into the assessment process. I did wish Rowe could have given a few more sample answers to aid in the direction a student should take, but I understand her reasoning: develop your own.In the end, this book is easy to read and gets to the point: your promotion.
