Excellent book on presuppositional apologetics. I've read a number of books over the past four years on presuppositional apologetics and this book was very informative, most likely because it presented the subject in a non-academic manner. I've read a few books by Dr. Van Til and Dr. Greg Bahnsen, which I would highly recommend, but not being an academic it was slow reading. In comparison "Ultimate Proof of Creation" was an easy read. Perhaps because I was well acquainted with the subject matter. If you a non-academic like myself and desire to get a grasp on presuppositional apologetics then this book is a must read. In hindsight it would have been better, for me, to read "Ultimate Proof of Creation" then tackle Dr. Van Til's and Dr. Bahnsen's books.

Jason Lisle is the Director of Research and a featured speaker and writer for the Institute for Creation Research; he has written a number of books, such as Keeping Faith in an Age of Reason: Refuting Alleged Bible Contradictions,Understanding Genesis: How to Analyze, Interpret, and Defend Scripture,Taking Back Astronomy: The Heavens Declare Creation, etc.He wrote in the Introduction to this 2009 book, “There are many books that contain seemingly powerful arguments for biblical creation. And yet not everyone is convinced by such arguments… But is there an argument that is so powerful that no refutation is possible? It there an ULTIMATE PROOF of creation?... if by an ‘ultimate proof’ we mean an argument that is CONCLUSIVE---one for which no rational refutation is possible---then I am convinced the answer is yes… The proof is quite simple. It can be stated in a single sentence… This book is intended to be a complete guide to defending the Christian faith---emphasizing the Genesis account of creation.” (Pg. 11-12)He points out, “consider the ‘distant starlight problem.’ … As of the writing of this book, there is not a definitive, verified solution to distant starlight… Several good models have been proposed that can potentially solve this difficulty. But since none of them has been conclusively proved, they remain conjectures… at this point in time… the creationist has a REASON to believe that there is an answer to distant starlight… My Christian worldview requires that God really did create in six days, just as He said He did. Therefore, I have good reason to think that they really is a rational solution to distant starlight (possibly one of the existing models, or perhaps one that is as yet undiscovered). My reason for my rescuing device is that my worldview insists on one, and I have good reasons to know that my worldview is true.” (Pg. 24-25)He states, “Creationists and evolutionists will interpret the same facts differently---each in accordance with our worldview. Therefore, scientific evidence by itself will not resolve the creation versus evolution debate since creationists and evolutionists each believe that the evidence is ‘on their side.’ In order for the origins debate to be rationally resolved, we must deal with the competing worldviews---not just isolated evidences. If we are going to rationally resolve which worldview is better than the other, then creationists must learn to understand the worldview of the evolutionist, and evolutionists must learn to understand the worldview of the creationist.” (Pg. 31-32)He gives his one-sentence proof: “The ultimate proof of creation is this: if biblical creation were not true, we could not know anything! This proof can be stated in a number of different ways, but what it really comes down to is this: only the Christian worldview (starting with a literal Genesis) can rationally make sense of the universe. Only if biblical creation is true can we have genuine knowledge about anything.” (Pg. 40)He explains, “For the Christian theist there is an absolute standard for reasoning; we are to pattern our thoughts after God’s. And we know (in a finite, limited way) how God thinks because He has revealed some of His thoughts through His Word. According to Genesis, God has made us in His image… and therefore we are to follow His example… The laws of logic are a reflection of the way God thinks, and thus the way He expects us to think. The law of non-contradiction… stems from God’s self-consistent nature. God cannot deny Himself… and all truth is in God… therefore truth will not contradict itself.” (Pg. 52)He asserts, “An evolutionist might argue that… uniformity is just a property of the universe. This answer fails … First, it doesn’t really answer the question… the question is WHY? What would be the basis for such a property in an evolutionary worldview? Second, we might ask how an evolutionist could possibly KNOW that uniformity is a property of the universe. At best, he can only say that the universe—in the past---seems to have had some uniformity. But how do we know that will continued into the future unless we already knew about uniformity some other way?” (Pg. 60)He summarizes, “First, everyone has presuppositions… All of our presuppositions together form our worldview. Our worldview determines how we interpret the facts, and even what constitutes a ‘fact.’ … Second, the presuppositions of the unbeliever do not comport… They are inconsistent, often self-refuting, and would make knowledge impossible. The unbeliever’s worldview cannot account for the preconditions of intelligibility… Without a rational basis for the preconditions of intelligibility, the unbeliever cannot really KNOW anything by his own worldview. He can certainly believe things, but he has no way to prove them, and thus he doesn’t actually KNOW them, based on his own worldview. Third… unbelievers will compulsively ‘steal’ Christian presuppositions in order to function… Fourth, to expose the inconsistency in unbelieving thought, we should use the ‘don’t answer, answer’ strategy. That is, we never embrace the presuppositions of the unbeliever… However, we do show for the sake of argument where the non-biblical assumptions of the unbeliever would lead if they were true… We are exposing the fact that the unbeliever does not know the biblical God but has suppressed the truth in unrighteousness.” (Pg. 81-82)He argues, “apart from Scripture, there is no reason to think that our senses are reliable, even if they did convey survival value. Perhaps our perceptions of the world are totally fiction… just the result of a complex chemical reaction that happens to have survival value in the real world… Perhaps our perceptions of the world are totally false but are just a side effect of the chemical reactions that help us survive. In the evolution worldview, there is no reason to assume that our mental picture of the world has any correspondence whatsoever to the real world. Apart from biblical creation, there just isn’t any reason to think that our senses and perceptions of the world are reliable.” (Pg. 93)He concludes, “we can either begin with God and His presuppositions (as revealed in His Word), or we can reject them and be reduced to foolishness. The Christian claim is therefore not a vicious circle. I’m not merely arguing, ‘The Bible must be the Word of God because it says it is.’ Rather, I’m arguing, ‘The Bible must be the Word of God because it says it is AND if you reject this claim you are reduced to foolishness.’ This moves beyond a simple circle of reasoning.” (Pg. 146)He cautions, “ultimately, ‘success’ in apologetics should not be measured by whether the critic comes to receive Christ. God has not called us to convert people into Christians; this is beyond our power. He has called us to give a defense of the faith. Whether a person ultimately receives Christ is between the person and God. But God will often use us as part of the process; we are to give an answer. So our responsibility is to make sure we give a faithful defense of the biblical worldview.” (Pg. 167)Jason Lisle is best-known for his work in Young Earth Creationism; but this is a vigorous application of YEC to the Presuppositional approach.

Jason Lisle. The Ultimate Proof of Creation: Resolving the Origins Debate. Green Forest, AK: Master Books, September 15th 2009. 254 pp.5 out of 5This book was very helpful in terms of learning Presuppositional Apologetics. The author Jason Lisle is an astrophysicist who have over the years written and taught a lot on Christian apologetics and creation. He has done the church a great service writing this book. How good is this book? Before when people ask me for a recommended book on Presuppositional apologetics I recommended Greg Bahnsen’s book Always Ready. I still recommend Greg Bahnsen’s work but now I feel I want to recommend this book by Dr. Lisle first since the author has done a good job breaking it down as simple and organized as possible. This book consists of ten chapters and three appendices. After a foreword by Ken Ham from Answers in Genesis and an introduction by the author chapter one looks at the nature of evidence while chapter two discusses resolving the origin debate. Chapter three gives illustrations of the ultimate proof, chapter four on reasoning with the critics and chapter five on the procedure of defending the faith. The book presents us Presuppositional apologetics as taught by Cornelius Van Til and Greg Bahnsen. I appreciated the author using Scripture and sound theology to shape one’s apologetic methodology. Sometimes people think Presuppositional apologetics is against evidence in of itself but that is not true. Chapter six is helpful since it talks about the place of evidence in Christian apologetics. Chapters seven and eight looks at logical fallacies and chapter nine “closes the loopholes” with putting it altogether while chapter ten looks at apologetics in the Bible. After a brief conclusion the book has three appendices with the first one on hermeneutics of how to read the Bible and the final two appendixes are examples of how to answer the critics.I really enjoyed how Dr. Lisle laid out the book. I also thought the illustration was very helpful throughout the book especially during moments when it helps makes things more concrete since some of principles discussed can be quite abstract. The content of the book is solid and the author lays things out in an organized and clear manner. Having the examples of responses in the appendices was very helpful for readers to see it in action. As a constructive criticism I wonder if chapter ten on “Apologetics in the Bible” might have been better as the first chapter in the book instead of towards the end. Also I wished the book had discussion questions for the end of each chapter; but you can find a discussion guide on the blog Veritas Domain.Overall a good book and one that I used for discipling guys in apologetics with my church. I recommend it and I have also brought this book for others to learn about the subject of Presuppositional apologetics and how to refute things at the level of worldviews. I give this a 5 out of 5.

I have gotten more out of this book than I have from any other book in recent years. Dr. Jason Lisle does a fantastic job explaining (at a lay-level) why it is that physical evidence will never be what solves the creation versus evolution controversy. Dr. Lisle correctly points out that all physical evidence must be interpreted within a worldview. And for every interpretation that creationists have, evolutionists will have their counter-interpretation and vice-versa.The Ultimate Proof of Creation is a book that is really about defending Christianity at its most fundamental level, the worldview proposed by the Bible. Dr. Lisle demonstrates how all other worldviews fall short of the Biblical worldview. This book is simply a must for anyone interested in creation versus evolution and for anyone who wants to learn presuppositional apologetics at a lay-level.
