From the Inside Flap
Volume #19 in Whitman's best-selling Bowers Series covers two of the earliest U.S. coin denominations: half cents and large cents. These classic copper coins were made from 1793 into the late 1850s. In this colorfully illustrated book, America's popular early coppers are given the famous Q. David Bowers treatment: insightful study, rich historical background, and detailed data analysis. Bowersthe "Dean of American Numismatics" and the most prolific numismatic author of all timetells you everything you need to know to be a smart collector: how to evaluate quality, determine value, understand the market, and make good buys. Along the way, he explains why, in all of American coinage, half cents and large cents possess a special charm. You'll learn how the history of the developing nation shaped the coins' designs and production, and the effects the War of 1812 and other national events on their coinage. Bowers provides a wealth of information on each issue: mintages, existing populations, grading standards, values, auction records, keys to collecting and more. Historical background sets the coins in the broader context of American life from the 1790s through the 1850s. Hundreds of full-color images, careful analysis, and Bowers' engaging style make this book a treat for anyone interested in our nation's early history.

Just a great all around book by Q. David Bowers. I have been collecting coins for over 50 years and have most of Dave's books. Gold and Silver coins make up most of my collection, but I have been buying some Large Cents lately. Early Copper is very interesting with all the different die varieties and this book list them all. The first half of the book focuses on the mint and the people who were employed there. Hoards are covered. Dave also gives credit in this book to the people who have studied Early Copper. Lot's of nice bits of information that only Dave can put into words and he is probably the only living person that knows these things. As Dave said in his Type Coin book: Large Cents are what American Numismatics is all about.
A Guide Book of Half Cents and Large Cents, by Q. David Bowers, is a pleasure to own and read. The shipping weight of a hefty 2.6 pounds, and the 564 pages, certainly gives you an indication that you are getting your money's worth!Topics include coverage of the Philadelphia Mints and the minting process, numismatics eras, grading and buying tips, various ways of collecting, and lengthy in-depth reviews of Half Cents and Large Cents from the 1793-1857 minting period. Each cent type review includes practically all the possible varieties, with excellent "color" photos of the obverse and reverse coin sides. The photos appear to be life-size or close to life-size, which definately helps for viewing purposes. Included are the typical values of each coin, the estimated current population, as well as the designer, weight, composition, diameter, edge type, Breen dies info., and more.Q. David Bowers book, A Guide Book of Half Cents and Large Cents, was released this year (2015), and is likely the best modern-day reference book on this topic. You will enjoy reading this comprehensive gem for many many years!
This is a good book if you are looking for general history of minting as it relates to the half-cent and large cent and detailed information on those two coin types. If you are looking for a book on die varieties, a better value is the "Guide Book of United States Coins Deluxe Edition", which contains the same information on many coins series, without the general history of minting.
This book is very good for those just getting into Half and Larger Cent varieties, as the specialized books for these are either rather expensive or out of print. Note, however, that the section covering the dates is also printed in A Guidebook of United States Coins, Delux edition. Ironically, the photos in the Delux edition are larger than in the separate Half Cents and Large Cents book. However, the separate book has over a hundred pages of historical and background material not in the Delux edition. Since I have all the other books in the Official Red Book series ( this is #19), I went ahead and bought it sight unseen, because I figured out in advance that the separate book had many pages of additional material that does not make you feel that you are buying a duplicate book. As Large Cent and Half Cent collecting began, for the most part, after the series ended in 1857, the background material gives you a little history of the whole field of coin collecting. For example, in the 20th Century, the work by Dr. Shelton invented the numerical scale for condition that is now used across the board for all coins. Large Cents have probably been studied as a specialty more than any other series, and as a result, have far more identified varieties than any other series. Bowers promotes the Early American Coppers Club which I also highly recommend even if you are not into varieties. I don't collect varieties myself, but it is fun learning how to identify what you have as a representative year coin.
Great resource for identifying varieties of Large Cents in one handy volume!
Great history and background, not only of the coins but what else was going on at that time in history. Great detail on the varieties and strategies for anyone interested in building a collection.
Great book on Half Cents and Large Cents. As usual, Q. David Bowers is a fantastic writer. Not only do you get many facts about the coins, you also get the stories that go along with them. A great read for Cent collectors.
I am very pleased and would do business again if the opportunity arose.
