I appreciated learning about the day-to-day challenges of Dr. Maxwell's effort to care for the injured Iowa soldiers during the Civil War. This is a good read both about one man's effort and the complicated Sanitary Commission system set up to support the Iowa soldiers. I learned many things I did not know about the Civil War, for example, that due to a poor federal war hospital system, each state, along with volunteers cared for their own wounded. This is a good book to learn about the life of one man, his peers and the politics involved in helping wounded Iowa soldiers during the Civil War. It makes you want to meet with Dr. Archibald Maxwell to discuss his life and times.
