About the Author
Ann learned to sew; then she learned to dye fabric. In between, she earned a BA in Literature from Stanford University and an MA in Geography from the University of Oregon, married Jim, worked in Peace Corps Peru, and taught school in the US. By now, Ann has been putting dye on fabric for over 40 years. Her years of experimentation have led to mountains of hand-dyed fabric and hundreds of one-of-a-kind quilts. Since she wrote Dye Painting!, Ann has continued to explore even more variations that work best with Procion MX dyes. She has also enjoyed giving workshops all over the world, seeing first-hand how people learn and develop their skills with dyes. Color by Accident: Low-Water Immersion Dyeing, describes a quick and easy method to create richly textured fabrics. Her DVD, Color by Accident: Exploring Low-Water Immersion Dyeing is now used worldwide. The popularity of that book pushed her to write its companion, Color By Design: Paint and Print with Dye, a very complete manual of techniques for surface design with the same dyes. Both editions of her book The Quilter’s Book of Design, exhibit many of Ann’s quilts, all made exclusively with her hand dyed fabrics. I purchased both of Ann Johnston's books, Color by Accident and Color by Design (2017 version). I'm returning Color by Accident because I found that the info was a bit outdated. The whole book focuses only on one method, the Low-Water Immersion method and the majority of the book is just color recipes.Color by Design, on the other hand, is very informative and better organized, covers many methods, and also includes all of the important info from Color by Accident, including the Low Water Immersion method. Buy this one!
This book is full of information on many different techniques- recipes and step by step directions. Anyone that has an interest in textile dyeing for art, quilting, and fashion, I would highly recommend this book. I've been wearing rubber gloves up to my elbows since I recieved the book and have fabric panels in every stage of several processes all over my studio. Wish I had invested in it sooner.
I have several books about dying fabric. I like this one because it breaks down the process. It simplifies the directions giving you recipes. The other plus is that a page is devoted to the shelf life of the various products. I don't have to search for information to determine if I can keep or need to toss the chemicals. I highly recommend this book.

Step by step instructions, and page after page of brilliant color images take you through the process in an easy to follow way, whether experienced or new to using dyes. All of Ann’s books are exceptional workshops within the pages, but this latest edition came to me just as I was considering new ways of working with dye. It also includes information on easy to use resists, and unique alternative methods of applying dye to fabric, in addition to all the basics. Look no further for a book on dye painting or printing! This little gem is worth every penny!
