About the Author
Tom Wolfe (1930-2018) was one of the founders of the New Journalism movement and the author of such contemporary classics as The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, The Right Stuff, and Radical Chic & Mau-Mauing the Flak Catchers, as well as the novels The Bonfire of the Vanities, A Man in Full, and I Am Charlotte Simmons. As a reporter, he wrote articles for The Washington Post, the New York Herald Tribune, Esquire, and New York magazine, and is credited with coining the term, “The Me Decade.â€Among his many honors, Tom was awarded the National Book Award, the John Dos Passos Award, the Washington Irving Medal for Literary Excellence, the National Humanities Medal, and the National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters.A native of Richmond, Virginia, he earned his B.A. at Washington and Lee University, graduating cum laude, and a Ph.D. in American studies at Yale. He lived in New York City.

A classic.Tom Wolfe has always had his finger on the pulse of certain segments of society. His books are often as timely as they are on trend. If you change the names of certain people and issues to things that are happening today, this book is probably even more insightful now than it was when it was written.
Very funny! Limousine liberals get their comeuppance.Wolfe is merciless in his descriptions of the utter silliness of his targets.
i work in the building where the party in 'radical chic' took place so many years agoas a doorman/elevator operator and have had the pleasure of meeting and talkingwith mr. wolfe a number of times. i was astounded at both his expansive knowledgeof decorating details within the apartment as well as his acuity in capturing thestreet lingo and rancor of the 'black panthers' of that era. without ever being theleast bit judgmental, albeit incisive, into the heart of both liberal society folk aswell as staunch revolutionaries of that era. mr. wolfe allows you to truly bewitness to the event as it happens. but then, that's the job of a gifted reporter,i guess. he asked me my full name one time and still addresses me as 'john'or 'mr. murray' whenever he sees me in passing by. truly astounding, but thenthat's how keeps his pencil sharp, so to speak. details, details, details.
More than 50 years later the guests at the unfortunate party given by Leonard Bernstein and his wife for the Black Panthers, must still cringe when they think of this book. With that sort of reaction from the party goers, best you go along, with Tom Wolfe as your dinner partner, and find out what went on. In a very real sense, this as a relevance now that it could not have had then; Social integration was, then, almost a stunt whereas today it's a maxim. Sadly, today's parties of disparate groups could never produce the hilarity found here;. As to the Mau Mauing the Flak Catchers, anyone who has had to deal with "customer service' will find an enormous number of very helpful hints at how to get past those unfortunate folk who have accepted jobs answering phones believing, or perhaps told,, that derailing the customer or caller whatever their beef, was good for both sides.
Tom Wolfe skewers the leftist radical celebrities and socialites who treat various causes as a pet concern that they bring out at fancy parties but then put away when it's not convenient to have around. It's dated, 1968, but the themes are still relevant.
Perfect capture of the times, the people and places. One of his best works. With The Right Stuff and Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. Our times will be know to future generations by these books.
A truly great work by one of our greatest modern writers. I first read this book decades ago, and it stuck in my head so firmly that I decided to give it another read. It was just as good--maybe better--the second time around. You will recognize the names in "Radical Chic" and you will recognize the types in "Mau-Mauing the Flak Catchers." Tom Wolfe has the gift of seeing and puncturing all of our ego balloons, as he tells (real) stories that are a joy to read.
This book is brilliant as well as laugh out loud funny. I know of no other place where you can find as much insight into limousine liberals, 1960s radicalism, celebrities, identity politics, and the failure of the social welfare system in only 130 pages. This is only my second Tom Wolfe novel, but I can already see why he is considered one of today's best writers. He understands people and American culture better than anyone else. This book is really two separate but compatible essays. The first is a satire that skewers rich, white liberals and their fascination with a violent criminal gang, specifically the Black Panthers. The second part pokes fun at the social welfare system--its ineffectiveness and exploitation by self-appointed "community organizers." Who knew a community organizer could rise so high. This is one of the smartest and funniest things ever written on the subject. Highly recommended.
