Triple Bar was from Susannah Andrews' point of view. Susannah's parents push her to win at everything — if a pony will not win, it is quickly sold and another pony is purchased...Something happened eighteen months ago that her brother, Pete, was responsible for, but Susannah was blamed for it. Whatever happened was apparently unforgivable, but the book does not go into detail, so the reader has no idea what it was. Susannah has gone from being a bully to being bullied...When Pete comes home, Susannah has to decide if she will forgive him for whatever he did. The other girls will have to decide if they can trust Susannah enough to be friends with her...I felt like there was something missing from this story because whatever Pete did is the main reason why everyone hates Susannah. I could only mark this book as "okay" because it feels like a major part of the story is missing. The reader cannot decide if forgiveness is even a realistic option — because we do not know what happened...
I may have missed it, but I don't recall ever reading what exactly it was that Susannah's brother Pete did. Just that he'd done something to someone else's pony and Susannah had taken part of the blame for it and was an outcast. For most of the book, I felt I was missing some of the story, there just seemed to be holes in it where parts were missing. I like that each of the author's books are about a different character and they're all tied together in each story. The timeline seemed a little odd. The passage of time was normal, but the activities during that time seemed like it should've taken place over a longer span of time. Unfortunately, I didn't find how quickly the girls became friends to be all that believable and the event that happened in chapter 2 was horrible and really didn't need to be a part of the book. It didn't offer anything to the story other than to provide gossip against Susannah and that went away as quickly as it started. I don't know if I'm going to read the 4th book. I skimmed the sample at the end of Triple Bar and it just didn't have any interest to me.
I'm pretty sure Kate Lattey cannot write a bad book - cannot write even a mediocre book. I have to admit I was a little skeptical about a series of short novels as her strength is fantastic character development and I wasn't sure that could be done in ~150 pages, but she's now proven me very wrong for the third time. Triple Bar is my favorite of the series so far - she does a wonderful job of letting us get to know Susannah, the "wicked stepsister" of her world, and showing how people can change and grow. And, as usual, even the ponies have fully developed characters. This is a wonderful series!
My only regret with this book is that it wasn't long enough! Kate Lattey draws real characters; believable people of all ages and of course ponies. This is the third in the Pony Jumpers series and while each of the books can be read in its own right, the characters do intertwine. Susannah, the girl other girls love to hate, becomes a girl you can empathise with once you know her side of the story.Kate Lattey's pony books are set in the show jumping world in New Zealand, and for me bring back memories of pony club show jumping and learning how to walk and jump a course. How I wish books like Kate's, with such well-crafted characters, were around when I was a horse-mad teenager!
After reading the first chapter in the back of double clear, I knew this would be a good one. Susannah from day one has been a mystery character, and I think many people have been intrigued by her and her actions. This book gave me an insight into her life and just made me want to dive in and befriend her. In the end I was disappointed to remember she wasn't real. ;)
Again, Kate doesn't let the side down. We grow ever more immersed in the world she's created, more invested in the ponies and riders she's introduced. Seriously, these books need warning labels because you will become addicted!
very good read
I've read and loved every single one of Kate Lattey's Pony Jumpers series but I think this one is my favorite. I found the character of Susannah so compelling because in most pony books, the wealthy girl with the push-button ponies is the villain and is usually demonized and gets her comeuppance in the end. Instead, in this book, the first-person narrator IS the wealthy girl who is deeply unhappy (almost to the point of clinical depression) because of the lack of control she has over her riding and her life. It's been very difficult for Susannah to eke out her own identity because the people in her life who should know better, most notably her father, have no perspective upon the place winning ribbons should have in the life of a young girl. Overall, a very compelling narrative voice.
