About the Author
Thomas Pavitte, born in New Zealand, is a graphic designer and experimental artist who often uses simple techniques to create highly complex pieces, and whose dot-to-dot pieces have been enjoyed by people all over the world. Another Querkles book from Thomas Pavitte, this time nothing but cats. Not only housecats but a couple of big cats - a lion, tiger, and cheetah. This are all full-face portraits so that feline gaze is central to the picture. The housecats are varied - many tabbies but also a Siamese, a Persian, and an Abyssinian. (There may be other breeds but it is hard to tell with the small thumbnails.)Oversized 10" x 14" format means more coloring pleasure and the pages are single-sided and perforated for a great experience; 20 pages plus a fold-out 19" x 14" poster.If you've looked at the Querkles series and been intimidated, don't be. Although a page may look like a difficult maze of areas, it is really quite relaxing to fill in the different areas, watching the image gradually come into being. (The big picture and numbers could be too much for a child; also you want good lighting to work on these, as the printing for the lightest areas is quite light to not show through. To get started, pick out one of the less complex drawings and choose five colors with a variety of shades. For your first, maybe just use five shades of the same color to get started; either browns or greys will work great with these cats. You'll quickly see how the drawings fill in and figure out your own approach for the most fun. (I tend to go from lightest to darkest so if I misapply a light color and catch it later, the dark color can cover it.)
I just have to say that I am totally in love with Querkles! I've bought all four books, and this author is amazing! If you are a creative type who loves adult coloring books, but also enjoys using your left brain for mind bending puzzles, then this is definitely the right fit for you. It is so much fun to start out with a bunch of random circles and end up with a masterpiece. I've used markers and colors pencils, and both turned out equally good (pictures are attached). I think it strictly comes down to personal preference, and I like to alternate what I use. I will say that I enjoyed the Animals and Masterpieces books the most because the Cats and Icons books get a little repetitive (cat after cat vs. person after person). I prefer being surprised by my work in progress, and hope that the author makes more books with a greater variety in the future. The perforated pages make it easy to share with others, and everyone I've shown these to has gotten themselves hooked and went on to order their own books. Give it a shot - I promise, you won't be disappointed!
I love these Querkles books. I started with "Masterpieces", which is a very fine volume, and moved on to this book of felines. It has a nice mix of big cats and domestic cats, kittens and adults, beautiful and comical. The size of the book is larger than a typical coloring book, as befits pictures you might want to display, and the paper quality is excellent -- thick and smooth, and very receptive to pen and marker ink. It is not bad for Prismacolor pencils, either. The pages are perforated to facilitate removal.I like experimenting with different techniques, like marker pointillism and filling in the sections with short fur-like strokes. The Siamese, which I did entirely with different densities of brown and black "fur" strokes (except for light blue in the eyes), came out looking just like my two dear departed seal points. I fear I'll never want to go back to regular "boring" adult coloring books!
I love this coloring book. My sister purchase one for my niece and it looked so cute I had to match her.At first I didn’t like that you get to choose the 5 colors for each page because it would take a few minutes deciding on which fit best but now I love it. It makes it feel like every page you do is a bit original and it’s fun to see how it comes together in the end.I thought 20 pictures wasn’t enough but it’s probably the perfect amount. After having it for a few weeks I’ve done 9. Each takes me about 2 hours to color with my markers. I’m someone who has a bit of anxiety so this has been super awesome when I can’t get out of my head. Loved it so much I bought 2 more as gifts.
I love Querkles and they are even better with CATS!!! This is my first cat (pictured) and I'm almost done! What a blast for cat addicts and coloring fans. As a teacher, we like to plaster the walls with color (even in high school!) so these are always a hit!
Really fun and interesting way to choose colors and create your pictures. Great as they aren't super simple nor extremely difficult, plus is for cat lovers on this book!
I started with the Animals and like it a lot, so I bought the Masterpieces. That one wasn't my favorite. The images were just okay. (I like to look at the image in the back before coloring). But THIS ONE IS FANTASTIC! Cutest kitties! PS - if you haven't tried querkles, don't be intimidated like I was before trying. It's a lot of fun!
These are so much fun and I found myself able to relax so easily while coloring all of the little circles. The end product is beautiful, and unlike a lot of other color by number books, you get to choose all of the colors. I would highly recommend this to anyone wanting to take their mind off of daily stress and create beautiful art in a short period of time. I bought this book for myself (cat themed) but will definitely buy more as gifts for others!
