I’ve not had a bad experience with Schirmer-edited collections, and this is no different. The copy is clear, readable, not too small/is scaled properly to the page. I’m getting back into a flute routine after lapsing due to illness while in college and after. The material is challenging—there’s a good variety of patterns & skills that are worked in these etudes—and I keep reminding myself, I would’ve started slow 10 years ago too. In fact, I’m pretty sure I bought this for flute studio in college, because opening to that first page gave me butterflies and heartburn simultaneously. Even if I have a copy in my boxes of undergrad books at my mom’s house, it’s cheaper to get a new one (very reasonably priced on Amazon!) than drive 350 miles and deal with the chaos.
No complaints about the quality of the product. The description should state that the etudes in the book are at an intermediate to advanced level, however. These are too hard for my daughter who has been playing for three years (in school and in private lessons). I am sure she will grow into them, but we will have to wait a couple of years or so.
The Eighteen Exercises or Etudes for Flute by Berbiguier is a classic for flute study. The level of difficulty is intermediate/advanced with each study being in a different key and focussing on a different technical challenge. The length of the etudes is typically one page long with several a little shorter or longer than a page. These are pleasant to listen to and for most flutists, fun to play.
Good classic Schirmer quality. Heavy cardstock cover (non-laminated), staple binding, heavy music paper, slender enough to lay flat. Edition is clean and large printed, and editorializing seems minimal (good!). Some pages in my copy were not printed at 100% darkness. They are noticeably grayer, as if the printer was starting to run low. But every note is clear.
This book is a great book for flute players looking to develop stronger lip flexibility, smoothness and evenness in all registers, and better technique.
I am a saxophone player studying at university and my professor asked me to start working out of this book. It has some great technical challenges and every flute player I have met instant ally recognized the book. I think most of the exersises stay in te staff.
I really enjoy this book. I haven't played flute since high school and I really wanted to get back into playing with community bands and orchestras, so I decided to buy this and take flute lessons too. I highly recommend this book. Can't wait to start playing again!
Perfect for music majors! I'm doing one of these etudes for a jury in December! Very challenging for the intermediate to advanced! 😄
