This is one of the best dye books I've read! It goes beyond nuts and bolts techniques and delves into the artistry of dyeing, talking about optic color blending and how color works on fibers. If you are completely new to dyeing, I suggest "Hand Dyeing Yarn and Fleece" by Gail Callahan Hand Dyeing Yarn and Fleece: Custom-Color Your Favorite Fibers with Dip-Dyeing, Hand-Painting, Tie-Dyeing, and Other Creative Techniques as your first purely instructional book, but then buy this book to learn how to be a true dye artist! This book belongs in every dyer's library!
Felica Lo is a talented Dyer and Fiber Artist. In this book she shares the foundations and basics of her dyeing and color knowledge. Physically it is a beautiful book with great photography. It contains a large amount of information and is very comprehensive. As a beginner dyer I feel like it has enough information to help me get started and go beyond. In addition to dyeing it has a chapter on spinning color and a chapter on knitting color. The last 30 or so pages are lovely knitting patterns. Definitely a fabulous book!
This is the most understandable book on dying fiber that I've had. Not only does she explain keeping track of what dye/ratio etc but how to make it easy to reproduce colors and saturations for future sessions. I liked the safety discussion and how to keep from breathing in dye particles which can create havoc in the human body--on the bright side once they are dissolved in water there is no more danger than accidental coloring hands, nails, and other things.
Very good book for home dyeing I have many books and this is one of my favorites. However, I believe it is missing the exact measurements for the amount of citric acid. It does mention about the weight of goods, but what is the amount for the citric acid Is it 1 tsp, or 5 tsp? Difficult to say. The measurements for the dye is very specific, but the citric acid amount is missing. Also, on page 102 , the text mentions "skeins" there are no pictures of skeins, so it is impossible to see the colorways that are referenced There are many pictures for home spun yarn also, As a home dyer, this book, along with a few others, is a must.
First of all, I adore Felicia Lo. There is way more spinning info that I needed or wanted, but my real reason for purchasing this book was to learn to dye the way Felicia does. Her yarns (SweetGeorgia Yarns) are gorgeous. She is very sweet and she hosts podcasts on Youtube that are actually ALWAYS helpful.
I think this was money well spent!I like how it has photos of how dyes take on various fibers, from combed top to yarn; how dye techniques affect the final product made with the dyed yarn or fiber; and how to handle mistakes. There are a lot of things covered in an understandable way.
The information on dyeing is great, but a lot of it is dedicated to fiber (not spun yarn) and there are too many knitting patterns in the back, though they are nice patterns. I think it's a great resource for a beginning dyer.
This book is great!! So much information in this book then just your typical dye book. I feel like it's a chemistry book as well which is exactly what I was looking for!
